Cover Letters and Resumes Revisited
titelseite Letters and Resumes RevisitedWeve talked a lot before about cover letters and resumes, but sometimes a refresher course isnt a bad idea. So, when I was invited recently to participate as a facilitator for one of Mashables BizChats Twitter chats, I was really looking forward to discussing the ways that people can improve their resumes and cover letters. The other facilitators were Amanda Augustine (resume writer, career management expert, and career consultant at The Ladders), Erin Kennedy (career consultant and executive resume writer), and Debra Wheatman, (CPCC, CPRW, and Careers Done Write president). During the one-hour event, we covered eight questions. Ill present them in order.1. Is it important to have both a cover letter and a resume when applying for a job?Personally, I think its important only if the sttte announcement specifically requests a cover letter. Amanda pointed out that her research indicates that only half of recruiters place any importance on a cover l etter. The other half typically throws them away. Many participants felt that its disheartening to have your cover letter tossed when youve worked so hard on it, but its a mistake not to include something that could help land you the job. In other words, include it and let the recruiter decide whether or not to toss it.2. How can you make your resume really stand out?Debra felt that although content is king, aesthetic value is what gets you noticed. Most agreed that you should focus on your achievements, instead of just listing tasks and responsibilities. Some also pointed out that Microsoft templates, re-done to death, should be avoided. After saying that cover letters werent always important, I recommended a great cover letter3. What features should you showcase? GPA, school, skills, etc.?Erin recommended including your GPA only if youre at entry level. Again, achievements were agreed upon as the most important features, and I added that your value proposition should be stressedwh at can you offer that another candidate may not?4. What are employers and recruiters looking for in resumes and cover letters? We all agreed that theyre looking for information that is going to help them select the right candidate. They want concise resumes that anzeigegert a bit of your personalityso humor is fine, but only if appropriate.5. What are the biggest cover letter mistakes?Debra loathes poor grammar and spelling. Amanda cringes when she sees applicants writing more about why they want and need the job than why theyre uniquely qualified. Erin says not addressing it to the right person is a huge mistake. I think attaching a cover letter to an e-mail instead of including the text in the body is one of the better ways to ensure that its never read.6. How important is konzeption when creating a resume and cover letter? We all agreed that its not as important as content, but it is what creates the first impression.7. What are top resources for cover letter and resume support?I r ecommend checking out resume experts on LinkedIn, and reading their blogs. Erin suggests that contacting a professional resume writer can be very useful.8. Final tips?We all agreed once more that you must focus on your achievements. Debra added that it was important to be authentic. I suggested that applicants get rid of generalizationsif it can apply to anyone, it says nothing specific about you.I loved being part of this BizChat, and I hope they ask me back again soonFor a play-by-play recap of the entire chat, check out the link http//mashable.com/2015/02/12/improve-resume-and-cover-letter/

The Surprising Result of #MeToo That Men And Women Agree On
The Surprising Result of MeToo That Men And Women Agree On In the wake of the MeToo movement, gender dynamics and how they play out in the workplace have garnered long overdue national attention. Now more than ever, employees and employers are becoming increasingly aware of the overt and subtle forms of discrimination and sexism that permeate their offices, as well as the social constructs that tend to hinder womens career progress. While its hard to deny that our collective awareness of gender discrimination and sexual harassment at work has increased in recent months, a new study reveals that most of us, regardless of gender, dont believe the MeToo movement has actually changed anything at work. After surveying 400 men and women to gather their views on their life at home and at work, Fairygodboss in partnership with The Female Quotient and Progyny found that 78% of men and 75% of women say the MeToo movement hasnt made an impact at their workplace. Were always curious to see i f whats happening in the media actually reflects what everyday men and women are experiencing, says Georgene Huang, CEO and Co-Founder of Fairygodboss. While the MeToo movement has captured national attention, our survey shows that there is a lot more work to do to make a real impact in workplaces across the country.Part of that work involves taking a closer look at the way workplaces function to preserve social norms and, in effect, hold women back and then setting goals and instituting policies to disrupt those toxic patterns. For instance, Fairygodboss, Progyny and The Female Quotients survey found that women are more likely to get promoted by women, while men are more likely to get promoted by men. In fact, 52% of men who have been promoted reported that the brde person who promoted them was a male supervisor, while just 30% of women said the same. Meanwhile, 37% of women who have been promoted said the last person who promoted them was a female supervisor, compared to 19% of m en. Since leadership positions are largely dominated by men in fact, it can be easier to find a man named John than it can be to find a woman in many of Americas top leadership roles this promotion pattern does not bode well for womens advancement at work. Moreover, women in the Fairygodboss community have reported that theyd be more likely to stay at their jobs if more women were being promoted into leadership positions, and when asked about sources of inequality at work, unequal promotion is the most common response among women.Of course, challenging traditional gender stereotypes at the office is only part of the solution the same work needs to be done at home. Of the survey respondents, 40% of women said they spend 8+ hours/week on household tasks like cooking, cleaning, childcare and other domestic duties, compared to 29% of men meanwhile, 50% of women reported that they feel household management is primarily their responsibility, compared to 33% of men.As employers are now m ore carefully scrutinizing gender inequality in the workplace, its critical that they consider what kinds of untersttzung they need to provide both working women and men to promote a healthier balance both at home and at work for all employees. The MeToo movement has been instrumental in helping us break the silence and create consequences for bad behavior. Its given us the confidence to speak up and speak out, because were all in this together, says Shelley Zalis, CEO, The Female Quotient. Now we need to create solutions for change, and accountability for action. Transformation must include men and women working together.
